Study Accounting in Malaysia

Accounting is the recording, reporting and checking of financial information, so that owners, managers, lenders and regulators can understand how an organisation is doing. An accounting course teaches the rules and methods used to prepare financial statements, to analyse costs and to audit. Banking and finance, which is closely related, has its own page, linked below.

What students typically study

Courses usually cover financial accounting, management accounting, taxation, auditing, accounting information systems, business law and the basics of economics and finance. Later years often let students choose between areas such as audit, tax or financial reporting. Many courses end with a project, and some prepare students for the examinations of professional accountancy bodies by exempting them from papers; the course page or the university says which.

Areas and course titles

Titles include accounting, accountancy, and accounting and finance. Some courses are built around the syllabus of a professional body and others are general business degrees with an accounting major. Exemptions from professional papers are given by the professional body and are not the same as a licence to practise, so ask the university for details in writing.

Who the subject suits

Accounting suits students who are careful, who like order and rules, and who are comfortable with figures and with explaining them clearly. It involves more reading of rules and standards than people sometimes expect, and the rules differ between countries. If you are more interested in markets and investment than in recording and reporting, read the banking and finance page.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A foundation or diploma can lead into a bachelor's degree, and the credit given is decided by the university. A bachelor's degree is the usual first degree in accounting. Master's courses often suit graduates who want to specialise, or graduates from other subjects who want to move into accounting. A PhD is a research degree.

What to check when choosing

If you want to qualify with a professional accountancy body, check which exemptions the course gives and how the body describes them. Compare the subject lists, since courses differ in how much audit, tax or management accounting they contain, and check the entry requirements for mathematics and English.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between accounting and finance?

Accounting records and reports what has happened in an organisation's finances. Finance looks at how money is raised, invested and valued. Many courses teach both, and the subject list on each course page shows the emphasis.

Will an accounting degree give me a professional qualification?

A degree is not the same as membership of a professional accountancy body. Some degrees give exemptions from the body's papers, which shortens the route to membership. The course page or the university states which, if any, apply.

Which study levels can I choose?

The courses on this page are offered at these levels: Foundation, Diploma, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and PhD.

How long do the courses take?

The courses listed here take from 1 year to 42 months, depending on the level and the course. The duration of each course is shown on its row.

How much do the courses cost?

Annual tuition stored for these courses ranges from MYR 5,500 to MYR 17,033. Fees are set by each university and can change. Open a course page to see the source and the date of its fees.

What English score do I need?

Where an IELTS requirement is stored for these courses, the minimum score ranges from 4.0 to 6.0. Other English tests, other requirements and the full entry requirements are on each course page.

When can I start?

Intake months stored for these courses include January, February, March, April, May, June, July, September, October and November. Intakes can change, and not every course has its intake months stored. The course page shows the months stored for that course, or you can ask us on WhatsApp.

Are these courses accredited or recognised?

That is stated by each university and can differ by course. Zawqari shows what is stored for each course and does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters to you.
