Study Artificial Intelligence and Data Science in Malaysia

Artificial intelligence and data science are often searched for together, because they use many of the same methods and many courses combine them. This page brings the courses of both into one list, including business data science and business analytics. If you want the courses filed under only one of the two, the separate pages for artificial intelligence and for data science are linked below, and each links back here.

What students typically study

Courses in this area share a base of programming, statistics and probability, and databases. They then separate into the building of learning systems, which covers machine learning, neural networks and areas such as language or image processing, and the analysis of data, which covers cleaning, modelling, visualisation and the communication of results. Business analytics courses apply the same methods to questions in management, marketing or finance.

Areas and course titles

Course titles include artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, data analytics, business analytics and big data, sometimes as a specialisation in brackets after a computing or business degree. Because the names are not used in the same way everywhere, the list of subjects on each course page is more reliable than the title when you compare courses.

Who the subject suits

These subjects suit students who are comfortable with mathematics and programming and who like working with data. Before you choose a course, decide whether you would rather build systems that learn from data or analyse data to answer questions in a field such as business or health, because courses lean one way or the other. If you are not sure, a broad computing degree with a specialisation chosen later keeps both options open, though the choices on offer differ by university.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

At bachelor's level these subjects are offered as full degrees and as specialisations of computing degrees. Master's courses are common and often welcome graduates from other subjects if they have some statistics or programming. A PhD is a research degree and asks for a research proposal. Diploma courses give a shorter route and may allow entry to a degree in a later year, depending on the university.

What to check when choosing

Decide first whether you want to build learning systems or to analyse data, and then read the subject lists with that in mind. Check the mathematics and programming the course expects, which programming languages and tools it names, and whether a project with real data is included.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.

Questions and answers

Which should I choose, artificial intelligence or data science?

Artificial intelligence suits students who want to build systems that learn and act on data. Data science suits students who want to collect, analyse and explain data. Many courses cover both, so compare the subject lists on the course pages.

Are business analytics courses included?

Yes. Business analytics and business data science courses use the same methods, applied to business questions, and they are included in this list.

Which study levels can I choose?

The courses on this page are offered at these levels: Diploma, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and PhD.

How long do the courses take?

The courses listed here take from 1 year to 3 years, depending on the level and the course. The duration of each course is shown on its row.

How much do the courses cost?

Fees are set by each university and can change. Open a course page to see the source and the date of its fees.

What English score do I need?

Where an IELTS requirement is stored for these courses, the minimum score ranges from 4.0 to 6.0. Other English tests, other requirements and the full entry requirements are on each course page.

When can I start?

Intake months stored for these courses include January, February, March, May, June, July, September, October and November. Intakes can change, and not every course has its intake months stored. The course page shows the months stored for that course, or you can ask us on WhatsApp.

Are these courses accredited or recognised?

That is stated by each university and can differ by course. Zawqari shows what is stored for each course and does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters to you.
