What students typically study
Courses usually cover the main areas of the subject, which are developmental, social, cognitive and biological psychology, together with research methods and statistics. Later years add areas such as abnormal psychology, counselling, organisational psychology or educational psychology. Most courses include a research project, and some include supervised practice.
Areas and course titles
Titles include psychology, counselling, clinical psychology, industrial and organisational psychology and educational psychology. A general psychology degree is different from a course that trains students to practise as a counsellor or clinician, and the rules for practising differ from country to country. Education and early childhood education are related subjects, linked below.
Who the subject suits
Psychology suits students who are interested in why people think and act as they do and who accept that the subject is a science, which means reading research and using statistics. It is not a course in giving advice, although some courses include counselling skills. If you want to work with children in particular, read the early childhood education page, and if you want to teach, read the education page.
How the study levels fit together
Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.
A diploma is a shorter introduction and may allow entry to a degree in a later year, depending on the university. A bachelor's degree is the usual first degree. Training to practise as a psychologist or counsellor usually needs further study at master's level, with supervised practice, and a PhD is a research degree.

What to check when choosing
If you want to practise as a psychologist or counsellor, find out what registration requires in the country where you plan to work, and whether the course counts towards it. Compare the amount of statistics and research methods in the subject lists, and check whether practical training is included.
- Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
- English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
- Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
- Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.
Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
