What students typically study

Courses usually cover design principles, digital imaging, video and audio production, interactive and web design, animation basics and the planning of multimedia projects. Many courses also teach some programming for the web or for interactive work. Students build a portfolio, and courses usually end with a final project.

Areas and course titles

Titles include multimedia, digital media, interactive media, creative technology and graphics and multimedia. The emphasis varies: some courses lean towards design, some towards video and sound, and some towards the technical side of interactive media. Animation, design and media, and computer science are related subjects, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Creative multimedia suits students who like making things in more than one form, such as video, sound, images and interactive pages, and who enjoy learning new tools. The field changes quickly, so courses stress the principles of design and storytelling, which last longer than any single program. If you prefer to concentrate on moving images, read the animation page, and if you prefer visual design, read the design and media page.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A foundation course gives a route into a degree for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry. A diploma is a practical qualification, and a bachelor's degree goes deeper and is the usual first degree. Master's and PhD courses are for specialisation and research.

What to check when choosing

Look at the tools the course teaches and at how much of it is design, how much is production and how much is programming. Check whether a portfolio is part of the application and whether the course includes a project with an outside organisation. Ask which software and equipment are provided, whether students can use the studios outside class hours, and whether graduates show their work in an end-of-year exhibition or an online portfolio that you can look at.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
