What students typically study
Courses usually cover drawing and design, the principles of movement and timing, storyboarding, character design, two-dimensional and three-dimensional animation, visual effects and the use of animation software. Students normally build a portfolio of their work, and many courses end with a short film or a final project that is shown to an audience.
Areas and course titles
Titles include animation, computer animation, 3D animation and visual effects. Some courses stress the art of animation and storytelling and others stress the technical side, such as modelling or effects. Creative multimedia and design and media are related subjects, with their own pages linked below.
Who the subject suits
Animation suits students who like drawing, telling stories and watching how things move, and who are willing to spend a long time on small details, since a few seconds of animation can take days to make. The subject combines art with technology, so you will learn software as well as drawing. If you are more interested in design for print and screen, read the design and media page.
How the study levels fit together
Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.
A diploma is a practical introduction and may allow entry to a degree in a later year, if the university agrees. A bachelor's degree goes deeper into the art and technique and usually includes a larger final project.

What to check when choosing
Look at the work of the students, if the university shows it, and at the software and equipment the course uses. Many applications ask for a portfolio or a test of drawing. Check whether the course includes an industry project or placement. Ask which animation styles the course teaches, because some courses concentrate on drawn animation, some on three-dimensional work and some on effects, and ask whether students need to buy their own equipment or software.
- Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
- English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
- Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
- Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.
Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
