Study Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Malaysia

Electrical and electronic engineering deals with electricity in two forms: electrical power, which is generated, moved and used on a large scale, and electronics, which uses small currents to process signals and information. Its subjects include power systems, electronic circuits, control, communications and the electronics inside computers and devices. This page covers the discipline on its own; the page for engineering as a whole, linked below, lists every discipline together.

What students typically study

Courses begin with mathematics, physics and basic circuit theory, then cover electronic devices and circuits, digital systems, signals, electrical machines, power systems and control. Programming and the use of simulation software are part of most courses, and laboratory work is central. A final-year project, in which students design and test a system, is common.

Areas and course titles

You will see titles that stress power, electronics, telecommunications, microelectronics or computer engineering, and some courses cover both electrical and electronic engineering under one name. Mechanical engineering and computer science are neighbouring subjects, with their own pages linked below.

Who the subject suits

Electrical and electronic engineering suits students who like mathematics and physics and who are interested in things you cannot see, such as current, signals and the behaviour of circuits. The subject is abstract at first and becomes more concrete in the laboratory, where students build and measure circuits. If you also enjoy programming, look for courses that include computer engineering or embedded systems.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities allow diploma graduates to join a degree in a later year. A bachelor's degree is the standard first degree. Master's courses usually specialise, for example in power or communications, and a PhD is a research degree that asks for a research proposal.

What to check when choosing

Engineering is a regulated profession in many countries, so ask the university, and the engineering body of the country where you want to work, whether the course is recognised for registration. Look at the balance between power and electronics in the subject list, and at the laboratory work and project the course includes.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between electrical and electronic engineering?

Electrical engineering is concerned mainly with power: generating, moving and using electricity. Electronic engineering is concerned mainly with circuits, devices and signals. Many courses cover both, and the subject list on the course page shows the balance.

Does the course include programming?

Most do, because modern electrical and electronic systems contain software and the design tools are programs. How much programming is taught differs by university and course.

Which study levels can I choose?

The courses on this page are offered at these levels: Diploma, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and PhD.

How long do the courses take?

The courses listed here take from 1 year to 4 years, depending on the level and the course. The duration of each course is shown on its row.

How much do the courses cost?

Annual tuition stored for these courses ranges from MYR 5,500 to MYR 23,500. Fees are set by each university and can change. Open a course page to see the source and the date of its fees.

What English score do I need?

Where an IELTS requirement is stored for these courses, the minimum score ranges from 5.0 to 5.5. Other English tests, other requirements and the full entry requirements are on each course page.

When can I start?

Intake months stored for these courses include January, March, April, May, July, September, October and November. Intakes can change, and not every course has its intake months stored. The course page shows the months stored for that course, or you can ask us on WhatsApp.

Are these courses accredited or recognised?

That is stated by each university and can differ by course. Zawqari shows what is stored for each course and does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters to you.
