Study Artificial Intelligence in Malaysia

Artificial intelligence is the study of computer systems that learn from data, recognise patterns and make or support decisions. Its methods include machine learning, neural networks, language and image processing, and the reasoning and planning used in robotics. This page lists the courses our data files under artificial intelligence itself; the page for artificial intelligence and data science, linked below, brings it together with data science.

What students typically study

Courses usually start with programming, mathematics and statistics, because machine learning rests on linear algebra, probability and optimisation. They then cover machine learning, data handling, neural networks and, depending on the course, computer vision, natural language processing or robotics. Many courses also discuss the responsible use of AI, including bias, privacy and explanation, and finish with a project or a dissertation.

Areas and course titles

Artificial intelligence appears under several titles: a degree with the name in the title, a computer science degree with an AI specialisation, or a master's course in machine learning. Courses differ in how much mathematics they require and in whether they are about building AI systems or about using them in another field. Data science, computer science and information technology have their own pages, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Artificial intelligence suits students who are comfortable with mathematics and programming and who like working with data and experiments, where an approach has to be tried, measured and improved. It is a fast-moving field, so courses stress the underlying principles, which change more slowly than the tools. If you are mostly interested in analysing data for a particular field, such as business or health, the data science page may describe what you are looking for better.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

At bachelor's level the subject is often a degree in computer science with an artificial intelligence emphasis. Master's courses usually expect a first degree with some mathematics or programming. A PhD is a research degree and asks for a research proposal and a supervisor. Foundation and diploma courses in computing can lead into a degree, and the credit a university gives is its own decision.

What to check when choosing

Check how much of the course is about artificial intelligence and how much is general computing, and read the list of subjects on the course page. Look at the mathematics and programming the course expects before you apply, and at whether it includes a project that uses real data.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.

Universities that offer Artificial Intelligence

Questions and answers

Do I need strong mathematics to study artificial intelligence?

Most courses use linear algebra, probability and statistics, and some ask for mathematics in the entry requirements. Many bachelor's courses teach what is needed, but the level differs between universities, so read the entry requirements and the subject list on the course page.

What is the difference between artificial intelligence and data science?

Artificial intelligence builds systems that learn and act on data. Data science collects, cleans and analyses data to answer questions. They share many methods, and some courses teach both. The combined page brings the courses of both subjects together.

Which study levels can I choose?

The courses on this page are offered at these levels: Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree.

How long do the courses take?

The courses listed here take from 1 year to 3 years, depending on the level and the course. The duration of each course is shown on its row.

How much do the courses cost?

Fees are set by each university and can change. Open a course page to see the source and the date of its fees.

What English score do I need?

Where an IELTS requirement is stored for these courses, the minimum score ranges from 5.0 to 6.0. Other English tests, other requirements and the full entry requirements are on each course page.

When can I start?

Intake months stored for these courses include January, February, March, May, June, July, September, October and November. Intakes can change, and not every course has its intake months stored. The course page shows the months stored for that course, or you can ask us on WhatsApp.

Are these courses accredited or recognised?

That is stated by each university and can differ by course. Zawqari shows what is stored for each course and does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters to you.
