Study Engineering in Malaysia

Engineering uses mathematics and science to design, build and maintain things such as structures, machines, electrical systems and industrial processes. In Malaysia it can be studied from foundation level to PhD. This page brings all the engineering disciplines in our data into one list, and below the list for each discipline you will find the study levels and, for civil, mechanical and electrical and electronic engineering, a link to the page that covers that discipline alone.

Course details on this page were last updated on 27 Oct 2026.

What students typically study

Most engineering courses start with mathematics, physics and the basic principles of engineering, then move into the subjects of the chosen discipline. Civil engineering typically covers structures, materials and construction. Mechanical engineering covers mechanics, energy and the design of machines. Electrical and electronic engineering covers circuits, power and communication systems. Chemical engineering covers processes, materials and energy. Many courses include laboratory work and a final-year project, but each university sets its own syllabus.

Areas and course titles

Beyond the three largest disciplines there are chemical, mechatronic, manufacturing, automotive, aircraft, marine, computer, energy and biomedical engineering, among others, and the list below shows each one that has courses in our data. Mechatronic engineering combines mechanical, electronic and computing subjects. Engineering management courses, usually at master's level, add management subjects to an engineering background and are included here.

Who the subject suits

Engineering suits students who like mathematics and science and who want to use them to make or improve things that work. Courses are demanding and cumulative, with a heavy load of problem-solving and laboratory work, so it helps to enjoy that kind of work. If you are not yet sure which discipline to choose, read the descriptions of civil, mechanical and electrical and electronic engineering on this page and look at which course subjects attract you, since the first year often covers much of the same ground.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A foundation course prepares students for a bachelor's degree. A diploma is a shorter qualification, and whether it counts towards a degree depends on the university. A bachelor's degree is the standard first degree for professional engineering study. Master's and PhD courses build on a first degree in engineering or a closely related subject, and a PhD asks for a research proposal.

What to check when choosing

Engineering is a regulated profession in many countries. If you plan to work as a professional engineer, ask the university, and the engineering body of the country where you want to work, whether the course is recognised for registration. Also check the mathematics and science subjects the entry requirements ask for, because they are specific to engineering.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between civil, mechanical and electrical engineering?

Civil engineering deals with structures such as buildings, roads and bridges. Mechanical engineering deals with machines and mechanical systems. Electrical and electronic engineering deals with electrical power, electronics and communication systems. Chemical engineering deals with industrial processes. The course pages show what each course covers.

Can I change discipline after the first year?

That is decided by each university and course. Some courses share a common first year and some do not. Ask the university before you apply if you may want to change.

Which study levels can I choose?

The courses on this page are offered at these levels: Foundation, Diploma, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and PhD.

How long do the courses take?

The courses listed here take from 1 year to 4 years, depending on the level and the course. The duration of each course is shown on its row.

How much do the courses cost?

Annual tuition stored for these courses ranges from MYR 5,500 to MYR 27,000. Fees are set by each university and can change. Open a course page to see the source and the date of its fees.

What English score do I need?

Where an IELTS requirement is stored for these courses, the minimum score ranges from 4.0 to 6.0. Other English tests, other requirements and the full entry requirements are on each course page.

When can I start?

Intake months stored for these courses include January, February, March, April, May, June, July, September, October and November. Intakes can change, and not every course has its intake months stored. The course page shows the months stored for that course, or you can ask us on WhatsApp.

Are these courses accredited or recognised?

That is stated by each university and can differ by course. Zawqari shows what is stored for each course and does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters to you.
