Study Architecture in Malaysia

Architecture is the design of buildings and of the spaces around them. An architecture course combines design, drawing and model making with the study of construction, structure, history and the way people use buildings. The courses on this page are those filed under architecture in our data; other built-environment subjects such as quantity surveying or interior design are not part of this list.

What students typically study

Architecture is learnt largely in the design studio, where students work on projects and present them for discussion. Alongside it come architectural history and theory, building construction and materials, structures, environmental design, drawing and digital design tools. Courses usually run over several years, and a portfolio of design work is often part of the application.

Areas and course titles

Titles can name a bachelor's degree in architecture or a related degree such as architectural studies, and master's courses may specialise in design, urban design or sustainable buildings. Civil engineering, which covers how a building stands, and design and media are neighbouring subjects with pages of their own, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Architecture suits students who enjoy drawing and making things, who are interested in how people use buildings and cities, and who are ready to work long hours in a studio and to have their designs discussed openly. It combines creative work with technical subjects, so you need both interests. If you are more interested in how structures are calculated and built, read the civil engineering page.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A foundation course or diploma can give a route into a bachelor's degree, and the credit a university gives is its own decision. In many countries the path to registering as an architect has several stages, with a first degree followed by further study and practice. The stages differ by country, so check them with the university and with the body that registers architects where you plan to work.

What to check when choosing

Ask whether the course is recognised for professional registration in the country where you want to work, and ask the university to confirm that in writing. Check what the application needs, since many courses ask for a portfolio or a design test, and look at the studio facilities and the way projects are assessed.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.

Questions and answers

Do I need to be able to draw to study architecture?

Drawing helps, and many applications ask for a portfolio, but courses also teach drawing and digital design from the start. The entry requirements on each course page say what is asked.

Is an architecture degree enough to become a registered architect?

Usually not on its own. Registration normally needs further study or practice, and the rules differ from country to country. Ask the university and the registering body in the country where you plan to work.
