What students typically study

Courses usually cover chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology, then pharmacology, the chemistry of medicines, the way medicines are formulated and the law and ethics of pharmacy. Practice-based teaching, including laboratory work and time in a pharmacy or hospital, is a large part of the professional degree. Some courses end with a research project.

Areas and course titles

Titles include pharmacy, pharmaceutical technology and pharmaceutical science. The professional degree prepares students for registration as a pharmacist, and science-focused courses prepare students for work with the pharmaceutical industry or for research. They are different routes, so read the course description. Medicine, nursing and biomedical sciences are related subjects, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Pharmacy suits students who are interested in chemistry and biology and who want to apply them to medicines and to advising patients. The professional course combines laboratory work with training in practice, and it requires care and accuracy, because mistakes with medicines can harm people. If you are more interested in research in the laboratory, look at the pharmaceutical science and biomedical science courses.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A diploma in pharmacy is a shorter and more practical qualification, and some universities allow diploma graduates to join a degree in a later year. A bachelor's degree is the professional degree in many countries. Master's and PhD courses are for graduates who want to specialise or to do research, and a PhD asks for a research proposal.

What to check when choosing

If you plan to register as a pharmacist, ask whether the course is recognised for registration in the country where you want to practise, and ask the university to confirm in writing. Check the practical training the course includes and the entry requirements for chemistry and biology.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
