Study Education in Malaysia

Education is the study of how people learn and how teaching can help them. An education course may prepare students to teach, to lead schools and colleges, to design curricula or to research learning. The courses on this page are those filed under education in our data; early childhood education has its own page, linked below.

Course details on this page were last updated on 27 Oct 2026.

What students typically study

Courses usually cover the theory of learning and teaching, curriculum and assessment, classroom practice and the use of technology in teaching. Teacher-preparation courses include supervised teaching practice in schools. Postgraduate courses add educational leadership, research methods and a specialised area of education.

Areas and course titles

Titles include education with a subject, such as teaching English as a second language, postgraduate diplomas and certificates in education, master's degrees in educational leadership and doctoral degrees in education. Psychology and early childhood education are related subjects, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Education suits students who are interested in how people learn, who are patient and who enjoy explaining things. Many courses are for people who already hold a degree and want to teach, to lead a school or to research learning, so check the entry requirements to see whether a course starts from a first degree. If you want to work with young children, read the early childhood education page.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

Education is studied at several levels, and postgraduate study is common. A postgraduate certificate or diploma is shorter than a master's degree and is usually taken after a first degree. A PhD is a research degree and asks for a research proposal.

What to check when choosing

Whether a course allows you to teach in a school depends on the rules of the country where you want to work. Ask the university, and the education authority of that country, whether the course is accepted for teacher registration. Check whether a supervised teaching practice is included. Ask whether the course is taught in person, online or in a mixture, and how many hours you are expected to study each week. Postgraduate courses are often taken while working, and the course page may say whether evening or weekend classes exist.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
