What students typically study

Courses usually start with economics, accounting and statistics, then cover financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, investment and portfolio theory, risk management and financial regulation. Islamic finance courses add the principles of Islamic law as they apply to contracts and financial products. Financial technology courses combine finance with programming and data analysis. Many courses end with a project or a dissertation.

Areas and course titles

Titles include banking, finance, Islamic banking and finance, financial technology and accounting and finance. They differ in emphasis: a banking course looks closely at financial institutions, a finance course at companies and investments, and an Islamic finance course at the rules that apply to financial products. Business management and accounting are related subjects, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Banking and finance suits students who are comfortable with numbers and who are interested in money, markets and how decisions are made when the outcome is uncertain. The subject uses a good deal of economics and statistics, and some courses use programming. If you are mostly interested in recording and reporting financial information, read the accounting page, and if you want a wider view of organisations, read the business management page.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A diploma introduces the basics in a shorter time, and some universities allow diploma graduates to join a degree in a later year. A bachelor's degree is the usual first degree, and a master's degree builds on it, sometimes with a specialisation such as Islamic finance. A PhD is a research degree and asks for a research proposal.

What to check when choosing

Compare the subject lists on the course pages, because finance courses differ in how much mathematics and statistics they use. If you are considering Islamic finance, check how the course treats the religious and legal background. If you plan to work in a regulated profession, ask the university what the course is recognised for.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
