Study Data Science in Malaysia

Data science is about collecting, cleaning and analysing data to answer questions and to support decisions. It draws on statistics, programming and knowledge of the area the data comes from, whether that is business, health, science or something else. This page lists the courses our data files under data science itself; the page for artificial intelligence and data science, linked below, brings it together with artificial intelligence.

What students typically study

A data science course normally teaches statistics and probability, programming in a language such as Python or R, databases and data cleaning, and then data visualisation, machine learning and the communication of results. Many courses use real or realistic data sets for their assignments, and later years often include a project or dissertation in which students analyse a data set of their own choice.

Areas and course titles

Titles can include analytics, business analytics or big data, and some courses are aimed at a particular field, such as business or health. Courses differ in how technical they are: some stress the statistics and the programming, and others stress how to explain findings to people who are not specialists. Artificial intelligence, computer science and information technology have their own pages, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Data science suits students who like finding the answer hidden in a large set of figures and then explaining it clearly to someone else. It asks for comfort with statistics and with programming, and also for care, because conclusions are only as sound as the data and the method behind them. If you want to build systems that learn from data, rather than analyse it, compare the artificial intelligence page.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

At bachelor's level, data science is a full degree or a specialisation inside a computing or business degree. A master's degree is often taken after a first degree in another subject and expects some statistics or programming. A PhD is a research degree. Diploma and foundation courses in computing or business give routes into a degree, and universities decide the credit they allow.

What to check when choosing

Read the list of subjects on the course page and look at how much is statistics, how much is programming and how much is about the field of application. Check which programming languages and tools are named, and what mathematics or programming the entry requirements assume.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.

Universities that offer Data Science

Questions and answers

What is the difference between data science and data analytics?

The terms overlap, and universities use them differently. Data analytics usually emphasises examining data to answer questions in a given field, while data science usually adds more programming and modelling. The subject list on each course page shows what a course actually teaches.

Do I need a computing background to study data science?

Not always. Some master's courses are designed for graduates from other subjects, while others expect programming or statistics. The entry requirements on each course page say what is asked.

Which study levels can I choose?

The courses on this page are offered at these levels: Diploma, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and PhD.

How long do the courses take?

The courses listed here take from 1 year to 3 years, depending on the level and the course. The duration of each course is shown on its row.

How much do the courses cost?

Fees are set by each university and can change. Open a course page to see the source and the date of its fees.

What English score do I need?

Where an IELTS requirement is stored for these courses, the minimum score ranges from 4.5 to 6.0. Other English tests, other requirements and the full entry requirements are on each course page.

When can I start?

Intake months stored for these courses include January, March, May, July, September, October and November. Intakes can change, and not every course has its intake months stored. The course page shows the months stored for that course, or you can ask us on WhatsApp.

Are these courses accredited or recognised?

That is stated by each university and can differ by course. Zawqari shows what is stored for each course and does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters to you.
