What students typically study

Courses usually cover anatomy and physiology, the basics of nursing practice, medical and surgical nursing, mental health, care of children and of older people, community health and the ethics and law of nursing. Clinical placements are a large part of the course, so students spend time in real care settings. Some courses specialise in an area such as midwifery or critical care.

Areas and course titles

The list includes certificate, diploma, bachelor's and postgraduate courses. Some are entry-level nursing qualifications and others are for people who are already nurses and want to specialise or to study at a higher level. Read the entry requirements to see which a course is. Medicine, pharmacy and biomedical sciences are related subjects, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Nursing suits students who want to work directly with people who are ill, injured or vulnerable, and who can keep calm and be considerate under pressure. The course is physically and emotionally demanding, and a large share of it takes place in clinical settings. If you are more interested in the science of disease than in patient care, read the biomedical sciences page.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A diploma is a shorter, practical qualification that can lead to registration in some countries and can sometimes lead into a degree. A bachelor's degree is the standard degree-level nursing qualification. Master's courses usually expect a nursing qualification and experience, and a PhD is a research degree that asks for a research proposal.

What to check when choosing

Registration as a nurse is controlled in each country. Ask the university, and the nursing authority where you plan to work, whether the course is recognised and what extra steps are required. Check how many clinical placement hours the course includes, where they take place and who arranges them.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
