Study Civil Engineering in Malaysia
Civil engineering is the engineering of the built environment: buildings, bridges, roads, water supply, drainage and the ground they stand on. A civil engineer works out how a structure will carry its loads, which materials to use and how the work should be organised and made safe. This page covers civil engineering on its own; the page for engineering as a whole, linked below, lists all the disciplines together.

What students typically study
Courses begin with mathematics, physics and engineering mechanics, then cover structural analysis, construction materials, soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, surveying and transport. Design projects, laboratory work and computer-aided design are common, and many courses finish with a final-year project on a real or realistic design problem.
Areas and course titles
Within civil engineering you will meet titles that stress structures, geotechnics, water and environment, transport or construction. Some courses are called structural engineering or water engineering. Architecture and mechanical engineering are neighbouring subjects, and their pages are linked below.
Who the subject suits
Civil engineering suits students who are interested in buildings, roads, bridges and water, and who like combining mathematics and physics with practical judgement about materials and sites. Some of the work is done outdoors and some at a computer, and courses include both. If you are more drawn to the look and use of buildings than to how they stand, read the architecture page as well.
How the study levels fit together
Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.
A diploma is a shorter qualification and may allow entry to the later years of a degree, if the university agrees. A bachelor's degree is the standard first degree. At master's level, courses usually specialise in one area, such as structures or water, and expect a first degree in civil engineering or a related subject.

What to check when choosing
Civil engineering is a regulated profession in many countries, so ask the university, and the engineering body of the country where you want to work, whether the course is recognised for registration. Check how the course includes laboratory work, site visits or placements, and what mathematics and science subjects the entry requirements name.
- Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
- English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
- Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
- Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.
Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.

Questions and answers
What is the difference between civil engineering and architecture?
Architects design how a building looks, feels and is used. Civil and structural engineers work out how it will stand, carry loads and be built safely. The two subjects work together, and each has its own page.
Does the course include practical work?
Most civil engineering courses include laboratory work and design projects, and some include site visits or a placement. The course page and the university describe what is included.
Which study levels can I choose?
The courses on this page are offered at these levels: Diploma, Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree.
How long do the courses take?
The courses listed here take from 1 year to 4 years, depending on the level and the course. The duration of each course is shown on its row.
How much do the courses cost?
Annual tuition stored for these courses ranges from MYR 18,550 to MYR 23,500. Fees are set by each university and can change. Open a course page to see the source and the date of its fees.
What English score do I need?
Where an IELTS requirement is stored for these courses, the minimum score ranges from 5.0 to 5.5. Other English tests, other requirements and the full entry requirements are on each course page.
When can I start?
Intake months stored for these courses include January, February, March, May, June, July, September, October and November. Intakes can change, and not every course has its intake months stored. The course page shows the months stored for that course, or you can ask us on WhatsApp.
Are these courses accredited or recognised?
That is stated by each university and can differ by course. Zawqari shows what is stored for each course and does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters to you.
