What students typically study

A medical degree usually starts with the sciences of the body, such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology, and moves into clinical subjects as students begin to work with patients under supervision. Teaching combines lectures, small-group learning, laboratory work and time in teaching hospitals and clinics. The courses are long, with the exact length set by each university and the country that recognises the degree.

Areas and course titles

The courses listed include the medical degree itself and related courses such as a foundation year that leads towards it, and postgraduate or research degrees in medicine. Nursing, pharmacy and biomedical sciences are related subjects with their own pages, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Medicine suits students who are strong in the sciences, who can study for many years and who are ready to work with people who are ill or anxious. The course is long and the admission process is competitive, with an interview or a test at many schools. If you are interested in health but not in becoming a doctor, read the pages for nursing, pharmacy and biomedical sciences.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A foundation or pre-medical course can lead into the medical degree at some universities, and the way it counts is decided by the university. The medical degree is a bachelor's-level qualification. Master's and PhD courses in medicine are usually taken by people who already hold a medical or science degree, and a PhD asks for a research proposal.

What to check when choosing

Medicine is regulated in every country. Ask the university, in writing, whether the degree is recognised by the medical authority of the country where you want to practise, and what you must do after graduating to be registered there. Check the admission process, which often includes an interview or a test, and the entry requirements for the sciences.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
