What students typically study

A business degree usually begins with the basics: management, economics, accounting and finance, marketing, business law and statistics. Later years let students choose subjects such as human resources, operations, entrepreneurship, international business or project management, and many courses end with a project or a dissertation. At master's level the Master of Business Administration is a well-known programme for people who already have working experience.

Areas and course titles

Business titles often name a specialisation: human resource management, international business, entrepreneurship, supply chain, technology management or business administration. Some universities use business administration and business management as different names for similar courses, so compare the subject lists. Accounting, banking and finance, and hospitality and tourism are related subjects, linked below.

Who the subject suits

Business management suits students who are interested in how organisations work and who like working with people and with figures. It is a broad subject, so it is a reasonable choice if you do not yet know which area of business interests you, because most courses begin with the same basic subjects and let you choose later. If you already know that you want to specialise in accounting or finance, read those pages for courses designed around them.

How the study levels fit together

Study levels in Malaysia follow a ladder. A foundation course is a pre-university year for students whose school qualification does not give direct entry to a bachelor's degree. A diploma is shorter and more practical, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year; each university decides how much credit it gives. A bachelor's degree is the main undergraduate qualification, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

A diploma covers the basics in a shorter time, and some universities let diploma graduates join a degree in a later year. A bachelor's degree is the usual first degree, a master's degree follows it, and a PhD is a research degree.

What to check when choosing

Look at the specialisation named in the course title and the subjects listed on the course page. Check whether a master's course expects work experience, since some do, and what the entry requirements say about English. If a course includes a placement or a company project, the course page or the university will say so.

  • Entry requirements. They differ between universities and courses. Compare the entry requirements on the course page with your own certificates.
  • English language. Most courses state a minimum score in a test such as IELTS. The scores stored for these courses are in the summary above.
  • Recognition. Each university states how its courses are approved or accredited. Zawqari does not confirm a university's status, so ask the university to confirm it in writing if it matters for your plans.
  • Fees and intakes. Fees and intake months are set by the universities and can change. Each course page shows the source and date of every figure.

Courses are listed alphabetically by university and then by course name. The order is not a ranking, and it says nothing about quality.
